Detection Dog Workshop a Huge Success

Dog handlers, dog trainers and observers travelled from all over the UK for a two day detection dog workshop run by B.W.Y Canine Ltd. Stuart Phillips who led the workshop was joined by dog trainers Kat Janczur a dog behaviour and puppy develop specialist and Mark Doggett who has trained dogs to find dry rot and malaria.

The two day workshop was held at the Brithdir Hall on the Pembrokeshire Show Ground site, a site which Stuart says is perfect for training detection dogs.

"Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society are a fantastic organisation and really go out of their way to assist me, the workshop would not have been a success like this, without the use of the show ground site",  says Stuart Phillips who heads up Pembrokeshire based B.W.Y Canine Ltd.

During the two day workshop dogs were tasked with finding a number of items, from cloves and gun oil to explosives and drugs, with one dog handler team coming from Hampshire to carry out refresher training for their Victim Recovery work.

A number of different dog breeds attended the workshop including German Shepherds, Spaniels, Labradors a Dalmatian and even a lovely dog called "Callie" who was rescued from Cyprus.

The workshops are open to anyone who has an interest in scent and detection work and during 2019 there will be a number of other courses and workshops running.

Jon Chapman who attended the workshop with his Vizsla puppy Eden had this to say about his two days:

Wow, what can I say! I spent the weekend with Stu in Pembrokeshire on a detection workshop training my Vizsla puppy. Stu has an amazing knowledge and real working experience which allows him to read and work with dogs of all ages, levels and abilities. 5 stars.

Lara Maskell from Lara Maskell Photography attended with her rescue dog Callie and commented:

Had a great weekend training with Stuart, I have a rescue mongrel, he was so encouraging and welcoming to all the dogs no matter what breed or history they had and I really liked that. Really interesting to see how operational dogs are trained too, so thank you Stuart and team.

Janet Wykes travelled from Leicestershire with her black Labrador Jess. Janet and Jess are very active with Scent Work UK and Janet had this to say:

What a fantastic weekend. We have been lucky enough to attend Stuart’s workshop this weekend in Pembrokeshire and have had a great time. Stuart’s love of his work and his dogs was clear to see and it was fantastic to be able to learn from his wealth of experience. The environment we had access to was great with the opportunity for a wide range of searches both indoors and outdoors. Thanks Stuart, and also Kat and Mark for a great couple of days.

In May there will be another two weekend workshop and Stuart will also be delivering a 5 day advanced detection dog course in June.
