Stuart Phillips

Multi-Award Winning Dog Handler, Trainer & Instructor.

Having handled and trained working dogs for over twenty years, Stuart Phillips’ operational expertise is second to none. The tobacco detection dogs he has trained have been used all over the UK by Police, Customs and local government law enforcement officers to locate over 16 million pounds-worth of illegal tobacco products and cigarettes.

During his career, Stuart has worked with dogs of all types including explosive, drugs, firearms, cash, tobacco and mobile phone detection. For two years, he assisted UK Border Force in France, working and training live body detection dogs to locate illegal immigrants trying to cross the English Channel on ferries.

Stuart’s law enforcement career began when he joined the Police at 18. In 1999 he then started his dog handler career, training with Military Working Dogs (MWDs) at the British Armys Defence Animal Centre. Stuart and his MWD Kiaser competed at the MOD Police & Guarding Agency national dog trials, before leaving to establish his company, B.W.Y Canine Ltd.

Stuart and two of his Explosive Detection Dogs (EDDs) Chester and Pip worked at the 2012 London Olympics, ensuring that Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square and other high-profile venues were free from explosive threats.

Since 2013, he has focused on the training of tobacco detection dogs and was awarded a commendation in 2017 for his outstanding work with law enforcement agencies in the UK.

Stuart is based in Wales in the UK, where he has kennels and a training facility to accommodate around 25 dogs. Working Cocker Spaniels, English Springer Spaniels, Sprocker Spaniels and Labradors are his breeds of choice for detection dogs, and he supplies both trained and untrained dogs to a number of law enforcement clients in the UK and internationally.

Stuart regularly gives talks and after dinner speeches and demonstrations in addition to running courses for both handlers and dogs. Stuart is often asked to speak at dog training conferences and seminars in the UK and internationally and enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with other like minded dog trainers and handlers. He has featured on numerous television programmes for the BBC, ITV, and recently as a dog handler in the 10-part Dog Detectives series for Discovery Channel's Quest Red.

Career highlights:

  • October 2019, Stuart and two of his detection dogs, Scamp and Yoyo received a High Sheriff Commendation from West Mercia Police and the High Sheriff of Herefordshire. The award is in recognition of continued support to West Mercia Police in the enforcement and disruption of serious organised crime.
